What is the Buddy Walk?

The Buddy Walk is a day that allows us to honor our family members or friends who have Down Syndrome. It is a great way to celebrate them and help them show our community all that they are able to achieve! The walk is held in conjunction with National Down Syndrome month, which is October.

The Buddy Walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to promote awareness and inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome. It is a wonderful and heart-warming event in which thousands of people from coast to coast and around the world participate each year!

The goal of the walk is to promote understanding and acceptance of people with Down syndrome, whether you have Down syndrome, know someone who does or just want to show your support, come and join the Buddy Walk.

Join us for Buddy Walk 2008 (September 27, 2008)!

The Buddy Walk is the major fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Association of Central Kentucky (DSACK) and the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). DSACK is a volunteer organization comprised of health care professionals, parents and siblings of individuals with Down Syndrome, volunteers and others with an interest in addressing the needs of individuals with Down Syndrome in the Central Kentucky area. DSACK is focused on advocacy, awareness, community education and support for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The organization has been in place for over 12 years.

The mission of DSACK is to enhance the lives of individuals with Down Syndrome throughout their life span by providing support, information and education to families, professionals and the communities that make up the Central Kentucky region. With proper supports and services, individuals with Down syndrome will be productive members of the community.

Individual walkers and teams are welcomed to come and join us on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Keenland Race Course. Registration will start at 8:30 am, the walk begins at 10:00 am.

Where does the pledge money go?

Money raised from the Buddy Walk will be used to improve the lives of individuals with Down Syndrome and their families through education, advocacy, and research. A portion of the money raised will be sent to the National Down Syndrome Society (www.ndss.org). The remainder of the funds will be used by DSACK to offer support and education by maintaining a lending library, host meetings, establish scholarships for members to travel to local, regional, and national meetings, and hold activities for individuals with Down syndrome, their families and friends. For additional information visit our web site at www.dsack.org.

What about volunteering your time?

Would you or someone you know like to be a part of the Buddy Walk? We have a job for everyone! Volunteers are needed in the weeks before the walk to help set up. On the day of the walk we need volunteers to help set-up, register, staff rest stops, and clean up.
